Over the last few months, I worked with transition year students from Abbey Vocational School in Donegal town. The aim was to creatively respond to the apothecary items in Britton’s Pharmacy. Each student responded differently, some looked at the Pharmacy’s museum and others explored themes of Herbalism and Medicine. They utilized various mediums, ranging from drawing and painting, to wire and clay sculpture.

Sprigging was a cottage industry in Donegal. With a needle and stranded cotton thread, designs of various kinds were worked on flax linen cloth. The “sprigged” cloth, often embroidered and crochetted, was made into table covers, bed-spreads etc.

I am a textile artist based in Donegal and London. My heritage inspires my work, growing up with both Iraqi and Irish influences. My work is rooted in Irish folktales, translated into narrative illustrations that evoke feelings of enchantment. Sustainability underpins my practice; I work exclusively with reclaimed materials- moth eaten Irish linen, beach combed fisherman rope, charity shop jewels and beads- giving discarded textiles a second life as storytelling objects. I am inspired by the tradition of the SeanchaΓ­ and like to create drawings alongside hand embroidered puppets/textiles. With these two elements, people can share stories as if they were the SeanchaΓ­ themselves, a homage to Irish folk tradition.
